How Does God See Us?

Due to different preachers and viewpoints, we can become confused about how God thinks about us. Some claim God views us through condemning lens, while others sing about His delight in us. People throw out words like child of God, redeemed, and disciple.

This brings up an important question: how does God see us? What does He calls us? What do we look like through God's eyes? That's exactly what we'll talk about today!

Bible Verses on How God Sees Us

There are many verses in the Bible that tell us how God views us. If you were to read through the different books you would see many themes emerge. Below are just a few verses and thoughts that explore these themes. All verses come from the NASB unless otherwise noted.

We Are Redeemed

"I have wiped out your wrongdoings like a thick cloud and your sins like a heavy mist. Return to Me, for I have redeemed you." Isaiah 44:22

The word redeemed means to buy back, to pay for something. When Jesus died on the cross for our sins, He bought us back from our slavery in sin. In His eyes, we are no longer in sin. We have been saved from it. For those of us who feel trapped by our sins, this means that to God, we're not entrapped; we are free through Jesus.

He Thinks of Us as Friends

"No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, because all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you." John 15:15

There's a hymn titled What A Friend We Have In Jesus. This isn't just a random thought; God considers us His friends. He wants to talk to us, spend time with us, and walk alongside us in life. It doesn't matter if we offend, deny, or even betray Him, He still considers us a friend.

He Thinks We Are Precious

"Since you are precious in My sight, since you are honored and I love you, I will give other people in your place and other nations in exchange for your life." Isaiah 43:4

The definition of precious is of great value or high price, or cherished. When we hear the word precious, we might conjure up images of jewels, people, gold, or relationships. God considers us precious. We have value and worth in His eyes.

We Are His Workmanship

"For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them." Ephesians 2:10

The word workmanship means the art or skill of a workman and implies the quality of the piece, the skill that went into making it, and the work that went into it. If we were to see a beautifully crafted piece of furniture we might say it has excellent workmanship. This is similar to what God says about us. He created us with skill and crafted every bit of us. We were not thrown together or made without a thought. God took painstaking care when He created us and He views us as His workmanship, His masterpiece.

We Are His Children

"See how great a love the Father has given us, that we would be called children of God; and in fact we are. For this reason the world does not know us: because it did not know Him." 1 John 3:1

This might be one of the most well-known ways God looks at us. Think about a child and their parents. In an ideal situation the parent watches over the child, keeps them safe, guides them, and cares for them. While that isn't the case for everyone, as children of God we receive all the benefits of a Heavenly Father. God also cares, protects, watches over, and guides us.

He Views Us as the Light of the World

"You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden." Matthew 5:14

When we become Christians we are given the task of bringing the message of salvation to others. Jesus describes our task as being a light. We are His messengers sent into the world, given the special task of sharing the good news.

We Are Chosen, Called, and Royalty

"But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light." 1 Peter 2:9

We who were once slaves to sin are now royalty. It's like a Cinderella story; we who were caked with the filth of sin are now taken into God's royal family. We are no longer nobodies. In God's eyes, we are now, in our terms, somebody special, and it doesn't matter what our background, past, or failures are.

Being God's workmanship sticks out to me most! It reminds me that God created me the way he wants, and he loves me for who I am! No matter what I do, nothing will separate me from the love of God!
