Walk On The Water

Peter's the guy we tend to look down on. But let's face the facts: we tend to act a lot like him. When Jesus called him to walk on the water, Peter questioned before he stepped out of the relative safety of the boat. For a few moments he did the impossible. He walked on water. Then he doubted, faltered, had second thoughts once he saw the wind and waves, and sank. Then Jesus reached out and saved him. He then asks Peter, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” (Matthew 14:31, NASB.)

Around this time in the story we shake our head at Peter and say, “Tsk! Tsk!” After all, didn't Peter know that Jesus wouldn't let His friend be harmed? The Master of the wind and waves told him to come; surely he knew that Jesus wouldn't have commanded it if it wasn't safe. Didn't Peter have any confidence in his Lord?

In reality, though, we've been Peter at one time or another. Jesus calls us out to do the impossible, our own version of walking on water. But we hesitate, question and doubt. We see the difficulties, the risk, and the danger, and decide that it's not worth it. But would Jesus call us to do something we can't accomplish? Would He ask us to step out if we would only be destroyed? He doesn't lure us to a false sense of security; that's something the devil will do. Jesus won't drop us while we try to execute His plan and leave us to fend for ourselves. He will protect and guide us to do the impossible. “... for truly I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, and you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.” (Matthew 17:20, NASB.)

We can do the impossible if it's Jesus calling us to do it. Is it time for you to step out of the boat and walk on water?
